Introduction to Wood Carving
Instructor: Jim Arnold
This is the first of a series of classes that will give students a solid foundation to build on when it comes to carving wood. Learn about wood structure, density, wood grain patterns and the best tools to use.
Students will learn the basic ‘cuts’ used in transforming wood, prep a basswood board, learn the process of transferring patterns to wood, and how to ‘read’ other carvers’ patterns.
Every class features a take home project completed by the student. The ‘flower’ we carve in the first class uses all the tools aforementioned and breaks the process down to simple steps… by the time students complete the ‘flower’, they will have the knowledge to complete relief carving projects of their own interests and themes.
Classes are small and individual attention is big. Absolutely no prior experience is necessary, but will be immensely helpful to those who have a little experience as well.
C’mon, let’s start making the wood chips fly!
