Event Details

The inaugural exhibits of African art in the Stanley Museum of Art reflect exciting changes within the museum field that address existential questions facing the world about accountability for colonialization and human rights violations, about power structures and the meaning of images within a specific culture, and about how the past and present define the future. The art is displayed in new ways that emphasize movement and cultural exchange through time and across space.

Dr. Cory K. Gundlach, Curator of African Art, will explain the rationale for how the museum’s exceptional collection is displayed, alternative perspectives presented, and how collectors and museums shape stories of history and culture. He completed doctoral research on Lobi-style figure sculpture in southwest Burkina Faso in 2011 and 2012, and in 2022, researched traditional and contemporary art in Ghana and Senegal. Gundlach holds a BA in studio art from Cal Poly Humboldt and a PhD in African art history from the University of Iowa.
